It's a boy (again)! (I)
Greta had never been one of those moms - you know, the ones who completely lose their minds during pregnancy.
No bizarre cravings at 2AM. No making her husband run around city like a scavenger hunt champion looking for the one specific pickle-flavored ice cream in the town. No dramatic weeping over a commercial about puppies or baby pandas. And definitely no endless complaining about her back or swollen feet.
She was just Greta. Always had been. Pregnancy or not, she was still herself, just with a slightly larger waistline.
Except, this time? This time was different.
Maybe it was the fact that it had been 14 years since her last pregnancy. Or maybe it was something else - some sort of emotional ticking clock telling her this was important. Special. Bigger than her usual "Oh, look, here comes another baby" routine.
"It’s a boy," the doctor said, snapping her back into the moment. His voice was calm, the way doctors always sound when delivering news they think you already know.
Greta turned to look at her husband and snorted. Of course it was a boy. He just couldn't make girls. Not for lack of trying, obviously, but still.
Thena - sweet, one-of-a-kind Thena - was their only daughter, and even she had been a surprise. They'd spent entire pregnancy being told she'd be a boy. Surprise! She wasn't. But every other time? Boys. Boys, boys, boys.
"You know," Greta said, raising a teasing eyebrow at her husband as she studied the ultrasound photo. "You've got way too much testosterone."
He laughed, leaning over to kiss Greta's temple, which was his way of saying, "Yes, I am ridiculously manly, but you still love me".
