Cruel life

It's strange how life can take a completely unexpected turn. I never thought I'd have a family or a child. I never imagined I'd perform on stage. And I certainly never believed that the most fulfilling moments of my life would come from traveling the world with my family - singing to thousands during the day, playing with my son in the evenings, and holding my wife close at night.

Those were such happy times, but they passed far too quickly. More than anything, I never imagined how soon I'd become a widower.

That call from the police… the long, silent drive to identify her body… the crushing emptiness when I realized it would now be just me and my son...

It was hard to grasp. It still is. But because I refused to become a broken shell of myself, and because I didn't want my son growing up seeing his father as a shadow of the man he should be, I kept moving forward. I clawed my way out of the darkness. I didn't stop playing music - I even found a new bandmate. I didn't stop caring for my son, day in and day out. And I didn't stop sleeping at night, even though now I only have a pillow to hold where my wife used to be.

This world is cruel, no doubt about it. But I truly hope the worst of the storm has passed. From here on, I just want happiness - for my son and for myself.
