let's keep it beautiful.
Letting the door click shut behind her, Leanna took a deep breath, eyes closed and for a moment just listening to the quiet hum of the fridge coming from her kitchen.
No familiar (and unfamiliar) voices of families demanding her attention or offering thanks, no presumptuous doctor ordering her around, nor tiny hands tugging at every piece of clothing they could reach.
Just peace and quiet and the throbbing headache, that had accompanied her for the last couple of hours. She probably should have made sure to at least stay hydrated, if there hadn't been a chance for a proper break...
Switching the lights on, the nurse moved on autopilot: shoes off, keys dropped into the bowl by the door, before she wandered off into the bathroom, turned on the shower and got rid of her clothes, whose faint smell of disinfectant and bubble gum toothpaste suddenly stung in her nose.
She needed a shower; not just to relax, but also to wash away the remains of yet another long day at the hospital, before heading off into the night again.
It wasn't that she really had to, now that she didn't have to worry about previous debt too much anymore, but sometimes faces from her past weren't that easy to shake off. Sometimes they'd emerge out of nowhere, promising a night of laughter and warmth, something not wrapped in hospital white and she'd gladly grasp it.
From the bathroom, she could hear her phone buzz a couple of times, while running through her routine: face-cream, a light layer of make up and a touch of red on her lips and cheeks to make her appearance look more alive again.
It couldn't hide all of the tiredness that had taken a hold of her body, but as she stepped out onto the streets again, wrapped in a light-grey coat, she had put on that mask again, which she had worn for more nights than anyone could ever imagine.
