“—Ma’am? Excuse me- are you alright?”

How long the bespectacled woman sitting across from her had been trying to get her attention for, Tessa wasn’t sure; what she did know was that the answer to her question was easy enough, even though talking about it never failed to leave the back of her throat burning like she’d just inhaled another lungful of ash.

“No,” she was blunt enough to make the insurance underwriter flinch, nervously looking to the door and then to some spot below her desktop that probably had a distress button to summon the bank’s security guards.

“I’m fine,” Tessa added in the next breath, finding the words too awkward and unwieldy in her mouth to even attempt smiling when happiness was an emotion reserved for people much less familiar with its foil: despair.

Relieved, the woman blustered on with her explanation and Tessa wondered what life might be like if she were sitting on the other side of that desk managing numbers and desperation in the aftermath of some tragedy in what felt like a peculiar echo of the same profession that she could no longer anchor herself to. What was a mortician without a morgue? A funeral director without a home?

Uprooted.
Aimless.
Worthless.

“—if you could just sign here on this line, and here as well, we’ll submit the application for approval to have you paid out for the damages incurred, and you’ll be able to rebuild in no time at all.” A response was expected, but Tessa's silence had the woman shifting awkwardly; numbness had set in soon after she fled New York and the irony of coming back to nothing after a monumental loss left unaccounted for overseas…

“Thomas,” Tessa mumbled his name, making the underwriter pause and clear her throat. “I’m sorry-?” The woman was doing her best to understand the strange, bird-like woman before her, but Tessa’s ensuing murmur said that she was never really present to begin with:

“Me too.”
