Thistle is stunning and refreshing in many ways, but it's trailblazing that your character is a queer man and that's not a facet of his identity that is dwelled on.
The script is a work of art, I was blown away by how carefully the characters were shaped. Seth is the product of a placid past, an uncertain future and a turbulent present; he's on his late twenties, an age when he feels he should have figured out life, but he's lost and resorts to drastic measures to contain that emptiness. His sexuality is just a part of who he is. Just that. It's not something we see a lot in fiction.
It's impossible not to feel his pain.
Right? I was really upset the first time I read the script. Not because it was sad, it made me feel raw. There was a lot of tenderness in the screenplay and I related to it so much.
It shows. Your performance is an absolute force in the film: subtle but powerfully moving.
The character spoke to me in many ways and that was a challenge. Acting is basically working with empathy and there were parts in Seth, that anger, that desperation, that were in me when I was younger. Luckily, I feel like I'm quite comfortable with who I am and have been for a long time, but I had to go back to a place where, in the past, I couldn't go without hurting myself.
I heard the average takes per scene in Thistle was 22. It sounds exhausting.
No! I mean, it was hard, but I loved every minute of it. I reckon that's what film-making should be. As an actor, there's often a lot of sitting around and waiting. But on a film like this, you're being used all the time and you're striving to perfection in every way. Your energy is consumed at the end of the day. You feel knackered, but it feels worth it.

All characters in Popmundo are fictitious. Any similarity to any person living or dead is merely coincidental.
