A lot had changed since what he used to call a natural disaster, named Leta, walked into his life — well, instead, crashed into it like a tornado. He still remembered New York, her taunting him; he didn’t know why he had allowed it. Hell, didn’t even know why he entertained it. But he had. There was something about her persistence that made him want to keep her around; the more she annoyed him, the more he liked her. Then came the time when she showed up at his house in Madrid. Pool dunkings, hounds full of garlic that could make vampires go extinct — if they existed, and riveting French soap operas.
Then that question fell from his lips. “Could I kiss you?”
That kiss had sparked a fire that neither one of them could extinguish. And it had him saying those words that were now etched in stone — telling her to forget finding a boyfriend so she could get out of the deal that they’d made, that he was about to become insufferable if she did find one, because he didn’t like anyone touching people that he wanted.
Then she renegotiated the deal, saying she wanted him earlier than previously agreed upon. But for more. Whether she knew it or not, he was already hers.
