The Warmth of Home
Wu sat at the kitchen table in his childhood home, the familiar scents of spices and something sweet filling the air. The clatter of pots, Emma’s laughter, and their mother’s gentle humming created a comforting, nostalgic atmosphere.
His mother moved between the stove and counter, chopping vegetables. “Emma, can you hand me the garlic?” she asked warmly.
Emma, stirring cookie batter, smiled. “Sure, Mom! We should bake the cookies first—they’re the best part of dinner.”
Wu chuckled. “You just want to eat the dough,” he teased.
“Maybe,” Emma grinned. “Can you blame me?”
Their mother turned, wiping her hands, a playful smile on her face. “Remember how you both loved sneaking bites when I wasn’t looking? Though, both of you didn’t always enjoy cooking at first.”
Wu smirked. “Yeah, I was stubborn, but I wouldn’t trade these moments now.”
Emma glanced up from her bowl of cookie batter, smirking playfully. “I hated how messy it got, and I always burned something. Plus, I thought it was boring compared to everything else we could be doing.”
She paused, glancing at Wu and their mother with a grin. “But once I realized how much fun it was to experiment and, you know, sneak in a few bites, it grew on me. Now? I’m practically a master chef... except for when I still burn the cookies.” She winked, making them both laugh.
The love between them filled the room, and though the bullet scar on Wu’s chest still ached, here, it felt distant, overshadowed by the warmth of home.
