Sure, they did things. She wasn’t exactly keeping things chaste. But it wasn’t… addictive. Not in the way she thought it would be. But she never questioned it. Why would she? She was having fun. She was happy. And honestly? It wasn’t even the physical stuff that she craved the most. It was the closeness. The way they could exist in the same space, constantly touching, fingers intertwined, legs thrown over his lap. That was what made her feel safe.

Over time, their nights together shifted. At first, it had been all fire, tangled limbs, and rushed kisses. But then, somewhere along the way, it became quieter. Not distant, just… different.

Movie nights stretched longer, conversations spilled over until the early hours, and instead of making out, they’d end up scrolling through TikTok together, shoving phones in each other’s faces to show some dumb cat video. When she wasn’t posting, she was obsessing over the comments. Reading through thousands of people hyping up her relationship, gassing her up, making her believe—really believe—that she had it all. This was the dream, right?

And maybe that’s why she never saw the cracks. Why she never even considered looking for them. Because right now, this was working. The masks were on. And if they ever felt too heavy, she was too busy doing her skincare routine, slathering them both in expensive face masks, painting his nails for fun, and playing pretend. Because in her mind, this wasn’t an illusion. This was the real thing. And nothing had ever felt safer than that.
