ᴇʟɪᴛᴇ ᴍᴏᴅᴇʟꜱ - ꜰᴀᴍɪʟʏ ᴛʀᴀᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴ 🏮
When I was little, every New Year's morning we'd sit around the kotatsu—the low table with the heater underneath—and eat osechi ryori. Tiny lacquered boxes filled with food that each meant something: luck, happiness, health. My grandmother would wear kimono, my father would pretend to enjoy being home and my mother would remind me, very gently, how to sit, how to speak, how to behave.
I used to love it. The quiet rituals. The feeling that things mattered, that we were part of something older than us. But somewhere along the way it stopped feeling warm and started feeling heavy. Like everything was already written and I had no say in it.
Now that I live in London my New Year's mornings look completely different. No osechi, no kimono, no quiet pressure in the air. But, who knows... maybe one day I'll make my own tradition.
I still think about those mornings though. About how tradition can be beautiful and suffocating.
