〥 The Future Question. I.III

The questions never changed, only the way they were asked.

When she was twelve, the school psychologist leaned in with a smile too big and asked, “How are you feeling, sweetheart?” as if her biggest problem was whether her best friend had ignored her at lunch. At fourteen, the same question came with a raised eyebrow, a notepad in hand, “How have you been adjusting?” because by then, apparently, she needed to be “adjusting” to something. At fifteen, it sounded more clinical, more measured. “Would you say your emotional well-being has been stable this past year?”

Tabitha had sat through these sessions before; legs crossed, back resting lazily against the chair, answering with the right balance of honesty and detachment... Enough to seem engaged but not enough to invite further concern. It was a game, a dance, a predictable cycle of questions about school, home and her feelings.

But this year, the psychologist had changed the script.

"And what about the future?" The woman’s voice was calm and measured. "Have you thought about what comes after high school?"

Tabitha blinked. She could usually predict the flow of these meetings, but this... this was one of those questions. The ones that weren’t about homework or whether she and her mom were getting along.

"Like, what, in a philosophical sense?" she smirked, tilting her head slightly.

"No," the psychologist replied with a patient smile, "in a very real, tangible sense. What do you see yourself doing after you finish your mandatory education?"

Tabitha exhaled through her nose, shifting in her chair. She could already hear the expected answers swirling in the back of her mind; college, career and ambitions neatly lined up for approval. But none of them felt quite right, not in a way she could articulate.
