Donata had signed the contract with a steady hand and an unreadable face. She had read every clause twice, and not because she didn't trust the terms. It was supposed to be a transactional arrangement. She would play the role, smile at the right moments, show up when summoned, and offer just enough to be convincing. But the lines blurred faster than she had prepared for.

There was a moment, somewhere between the late lunches and shared silences, that she stopped noticing where the script ended and real feeling began. It wasn't anything obvious. Just the way he looked at her when he thought she wasn't paying attention. The way his voice softened around her name. The way her heartbeat picked up whenever he reached for her hand, not because he had to, but because he wanted to. And maybe she had imagined some of it. Maybe she was projecting feelings onto someone who was just better at playing the part than she gave him credit for. But even that didn't explain why she had started to care.

She told herself she was imagining it. That she had grown too comfortable in the lie. That it was just the luxury, the attention, the novelty of being chosen. But she replayed his voice in her head, the way he said her name like it was something he didn't want to lose. And she started to worry that she had already crossed a line she couldn't uncross. That her heart had found something steady in someone who had never promised to be permanent. And worst of all, that she had no idea when it happened.
