sometimes dragons must be freed
There was a dragon I once called home
A wild heart wrapped in fire and gold.
I held its warmth too close to mine,
Too young to know what couldn’t be controlled.
It slept beside my quieter storms,
A comfort fierce, a danger sweet.
I learned its breath before its words,
I loved the thunder in its heartbeat.
But even gentleness can scorch,
And even love can overstay.
Not every flame is meant to warm
Some are born to burn their way.
I kept you caged inside my chest,
Hoping time would soften scales.
But dragons never shrink to fit
The little world a human builds.
So now I stand with open hands,
No chains, no plea, no backward glance.
I set you free to sky and ash,
To destinies I can’t enhance.
Go find the mountains made for you,
The winds that understand your roar.
I’ll keep the echo, not the pain
A memory, not a war.
And in the quiet left behind,
I’ll learn the peace of breathing light.
Even the fiercest loves must end
And even dragons need their flight.
