WMU: My Motto
I've thought a lot about this. I've even been tempted to think up a new motto, something that seems more profound. But the truth is my motto is pretty simple.
Grind through the grind
There's a lot of things I love about being a musician. The fame, the money, most of all the adoration. There's really nothing that comperes to being on stage, the whole band perfectly in sync, while 10,000 scream for you. It is the ultimate high.
There's a lot of drudgery to get to that point though. Writing song after song even though most of them just end up as crumpled pieces of paper. Sleepy in terrible hotels night after night. Trying to make a name for yourself playing to 10 people a night. Your ancient minivan breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Badly managed clubs that don't have enough power for your equipment. And on and on. It's easy to look back now and romanticise it now. But it was awful. And it had to be done. The only way to get better was to put in the work, make mistakes, learn from them and not give up.
To grind through the grind.
And you know what? It was worth every bit of struggle.
