It took me a few seconds to know, days to rationalize, weeks to process, but finally here I am.
I could have kept quiet and kept it all inside, but forty-five years of life together deserved the right tribute.
We were little more than kids when we met, and it was chemistry at first sight.
Young, crazy, free spirits who meet and who don't need to flaunt deep feelings or excessive affectation to win each other over.
No lies, no false promises of eternal fidelity that, we both knew, we could never keep.
The knowledge that we were always there for each other was enough for us, and it didn't matter if we'd spent the night before with the lover of the moment. One of the first things that united us was precisely the love of our freedom.
A freedom we never placed chains on, not even when a glittering ring shone on our ring fingers.
And how we loved to laugh at that world that looked at us with cold,
impatient eyes so sure that time would swallow us,
that we would drift apart like forgotten echoes.

a smile I still carry like a wound and a blessing.
