If there’s one thing life as a pilot teaches you, it’s that time is a tricky, slippery thing. Days blur into nights, cities become dots on a map, and before you know it, months have passed without warning. That’s how it felt for Lou. Between the constant takeoffs, layovers, and navigating the unpredictable skies, time to ground himself felt rare. Yet, despite the chaos, one thought had anchored him.. Rosie and Sage.
Their last meeting had been a whirlwind. A ride from the airport, playful banter about cooking, and the hopeful promise of meeting up “sometime soon.” Yet that “sometime soon” had slipped further and further away. Texts exchanged sporadically.. occasional FaceTime call. Lou had meant to meet up with them in person sooner, but schedules rarely aligned. Flights called him away, and Rosie was busy adjusting to her new life in Seoul. Snapshots of life in Seoul, photos of Sage’s latest drawing, Lou’s view from a cockpit somewhere over the Pacific. But it wasn’t the same as actually seeing them.
So, when Lou found out he’d be home for New Year’s Eve.. no flights to catch, no rushed goodbyes.. he made the decision. An invitation was sent, hesitant yet hopeful. They can finally do that dinner. No FaceTime this time, he promised.
Plans were made and that’s how Lou found himself standing outside their house door on December 31st. In his hands, he carried a small bouquet of fresh flowers for Rosie.. colorful, vibrant, carefully chosen from a local florist that morning. In his other hand was a bag filled with souvenirs he had picked up during his travels for Sage gifts he’d kept for “when he had the chance.”
