9. altered reality
Tripp hadn’t messed up this bad since a decade ago — he wondered how simple his life would have been if, all those years ago, he had just completed the job. And not falling in love. Life would have been simpler, yet he didn’t regret feeling what he felt; he could still remember the feeling, but it was replaced by something else. Hate perhaps? He didn’t know — didn’t care to compartmentalize his feelings towards someone no longer in his life. Now, he was stuck picking up the pieces of another botched job — this time, it had much higher consequences as he had gotten himself crossed between the Russians and the Japanese. His only salvation seemed to be with the two women who possibly wanted him dead: one — the second female mark that he had failed to kill for whatever reason, and two — the woman he hadn’t seen over a decade after he killed her lover, his best friend. What could go wrong? He was already in perpetual hell, so he figured it couldn’t get much worse, but as always — he knew that he would end up eating his words. Ten-fucking-fold.
