The things you do for your kids - Reviving "The Hot Chick" one last time [part II]
What followed was easily one of the most hilarious things Autumn's family had ever seen. Lilly had known it would be gold, but even she couldn't have predicted just how funny her mom would look running away from Chase the rooster.
Back and forth, left to right, even straight toward the camera- Autumn dashed wildly across the set, shrieking half-laughs, half-yelps as Chase flapped after her with furious determination. Her arms flailed like a cartoon character's as she tried to keep her balance in her cowboy boots. Her hat was long gone, her hair now bouncing in pure chaos. Every few seconds she'd glance back over her shoulder with an expression of sheer disbelief, as if she couldn’t quite comprehend how she, a grown woman, had been reduced to fleeing from this feathered menace.
By the end, she was gasping for breath, cheeks flushed, eyes wide, and laughter bubbling up between her frantic shouts. And then came the grand finale: with a dramatic leap, Autumn dove headfirst into a giant haystack, trying to hide from the crazed bird.
"Cut!"
Autumn's head popped out of the haystack a moment later. Lilly burst into laughter the instant she saw her mother's new look. Her hair now stuck out in all directions, full of straw. Giving her the wild appearance of a hay-covered witch.
With a deadpan expression, Autumn stared straight into the still-rolling camera. She spat out a piece of straw, which she'd accidentally inhaled during her jump. Then turned toward her daughter, who was grinning from ear to ear. "Are you happy now?" Autumn asked, but there was warmth beneath her teasing tone.
"Yes," Lilly said, still laughing.
Autumn let out a breath, a tired smile breaking through her messy exhaustion. "Good. If you’re happy, then I’m happy," she said sincerely. "But I am never, ever doing that again. Now, please get that thing away from me. I’m going to take a cold shower."
