Solitude. The constant drone of the city—laughter, screaming, car horns, and brakes—swiftly exchanged with the soft plashing of the slow rolling waves hitting the jetty below and the chirping of the birds. The safety of her secluded escape house. The one she had run to the last time her soul had shattered. It would have been funny the way history repeated itself if it hadn't been so damn tragic.

Days—she had quickly lost count of them—passed by while she stayed immobile in her cocoon, wrapped up in a thick blanket of peace and tranquility. Artificial, produced by locally sourced white wine and xanax, but still a welcome respite.

A complete shutdown of body and mind.

The salty breeze ever finding its way through the open patio doors, kissing the stained and cracking cheeks of the void curled up in the massive bed. Eyes staring blindly at the changing sky. If she held her breath just long enough, she could almost hear the sound of the party below. Glasses clinked together, a faint melody, laughter. A countdown to midnight. The memory of a first shaky new year's kiss shared in the privacy of the greenhouse—stars and fireworks above the only light shining down on them from above—was as clear now as the night it happened. Yet it had never felt so distant.

He had been out at sea for months and months, trying to find his footing again after the world as he knew it had crumbled around him.
