“Mom, what is Valentine’s Day?” Melody asked.
Uh, a tough question. Did Mariela really need to explain all the rumors about who St. Valentine was?
“Well, it’s a day lovers celebrate together. They go on a romantic date or exchange gifts like flowers or chocolate.”
“But aren’t people already doing it if they love someone?”
“Yes, honey, they do!” Mariela paused to think of an example. “Do you remember dad taking you to the park on your birthday? He taught you some skateboarding tricks.”
“Yes!” Melody exclaimed excitedly. It was a recent hobby of hers.
“Do you also remember that your dad made a drawing in the park to surprise me?” Melody nodded while trying to remember. Mariela patiently waited until Melody’s nod turned into a headshake. Mariela kissed Melody on the head. She pulled out her phone and showed Melody a picture of the graffiti. “Wooow!” As impressed as Melody was, she didn’t let go of her question because things didn’t make sense. “Why isn’t it Love Day?”
Mariela scratched her head as Melody’s question left her no choice but to explain those rumors. She tried her best to tell everything more like a tale than a history lesson. Melody was looking at her mom with big eyes. Clearly, she had another question. “Am I your and Daddy’s Valentine?”
“Of course you are! We both love you so much.”
“Then, can I get some chocolate?”
Ouch, well-played… To laugh, or to cry—that was the question.
After their casual interview, Mariela was in her little world already. Her inner thoughts took the floor.
