All That Matters Now
Emma was overwhelmed — every second from the moment they’d gone into hiding to now felt like a pressure cooker that wouldn’t let up. The hiding, the fear, the secrecy… it had worn on her more than she wanted to admit. She hated the feeling of being hunted, hated that their lives were reduced to shadows and whispers, always wondering if today would be the day they were found. But nothing—nothing—compared to the helplessness she felt watching Hazel get sick.
That’s when everything cracked inside her.
Her baby’s tiny body, too warm, too still, the sound of her coughing echoing like a siren in her chest — it had ripped the floor out from under her. She kept thinking, Maybe if I’d done something sooner. Maybe if I had caught it earlier. Maybe if we weren’t running.

And now, as she stood in a hospital room watching machines beep and nurses move and Hazel lie still on that small bed, Emma felt a storm of gratitude, guilt, fear, and love.
