“Jade… I’m so sorry. Something came up. I can’t make it tonight.”

Her stomach dropped. The room suddenly felt colder, the air thicker. She reread the message, hoping she had misunderstood. But there it was, plain as day. He wasn’t coming.

She sank onto the bed, her chest tightening. The lingerie that had felt so enticing moments ago now seemed ridiculous. Like she had put on a costume for a play that had been canceled. She typed out a response, her fingers trembling.

“What do you mean you can’t make it?”

His reply came quickly, but it offered little comfort.

“Something came up. I’ll explain later.”

Jade stared at the screen, a wave of frustration and hurt washing over her. Later? Later didn’t help her now. Later didn’t erase the hours she had spent preparing for this moment, the fantasies she had built up in her head, the ache that had settled deep in her core at the thought of finally being with him.

Her mind raced, replaying every message, every promise he had made. Had she misread things? Had he not been as invested as she was? She grabbed her phone again, scrolling through their conversations. The words that had once felt so intimate now seemed hollow, like lines from a script rather than genuine expressions of desire.

A knock at the door startled her. Her heart leapt, hope surging briefly. Maybe he had changed his mind? Maybe he was here after all? She rushed to the door, smoothing her hair and taking a deep breath before opening it.

But it wasn’t J standing on the other side.
