trust the silence.
the weight on his chest wasn't uncertainty; he knew what he was doing, what he had to do. but what kept clawing at him was the echo of voices he trusted most, the quiet disapproval laced in care, the hesitation that sounded too much like doubt. they didn't mean to shake him, he knew that. they only wanted to protect him. but sometimes protection felt like restraint, and Jae had never been one to stand still when something called for him to move.
he dragged a hand through his hair, a faint smirk tugging at his lips despite the tension behind his eyes. they all talked like he didn't know what the risk was; as if he hadn't been the one walking the front line every time they faced something bigger than themselves. every unknown, every danger, he had always gone first. that was the silent rule among them. Jae cleared the path, the others followed. not because he needed to prove himself, but because he couldn't stand the thought of them getting hurt before he knew it was safe.
his smile softened as he thought of them; his so called
wolf pack. that's what he liked to call them, half joking yet half true. loyal, stubborn, and always circling close when the world turned hostile. brothers not by blood but by bond, by the years they'd fought and built together. he'd die for them without a word. maybe that was why their concern cut so deep; it came from love, the kind that made you hesitate before letting someone you care about burn for the cause.
he let out a deep sigh, the moment of softness fading into resolve. maybe he had been talking too much lately, explaining too much, letting opinions cloud the air. maybe it was time to go back to how he always operated; act first, prove it works, then bring them in when it's safe. that had always been the way. the wolves could question him later; for now, he'd lead the way into the dark.
just like he always did.
