Somewhere to Belong

Oliver had spent most of his life trying to earn his father’s approval. His story began with a cold father who never married his criminal mother, and who took another woman as his wifey shortly after Oliver was born. He was taken away from his mother and grew up watching his father’s new family from the side, always feeling like a guest in his own home. And the wifey didn’t try to change that; she kept her distance, polite but cold. She want new babies instead of taking care of Oliver.

Through his teenage years, Oliver followed his father and his closest friend Hans from tour to tour, working like a roadie, doing whatever needed to be done. He was there, always there, yet somehow invisible. There was a plate for him at the table, but never a place. They called him family, but they never gave him warmth. They gave him food, but not their last name.

Then the confusion came. It started slowly in the way he looked at other boys. He didn’t know what it meant, and he didn’t have anyone to ask. He tried to hide it, bury it under jokes and silence, but it stayed. When his father found out, there weren’t any big fights, just a door closing. That was it. So he left. He started drifting from one town to another, trying to find somewhere that felt right, someone who wouldn’t turn away when they saw him who he actually was.
