The Dress That Spoke for Gio | #LasEastham
Giovanna remembered something that had marked her since she was very little. She, a girl who had run away from the orphanage with nothing but the clothes on her back—rags unworthy of any loved person in the world—once encountered a very young woman who, upon realizing she was alone and had nowhere to go or anyone to turn to, took her by the hand. That woman brought her to a home, which at the time was a modest apartment in Rio de Janeiro, barely big enough for the two of them. There, she gave her clothes. Giovanna had never owned clothes of her own. Everything had been hand-me-downs from the older girls at the orphanage.
“This is beautiful!” she remembers saying, amazed by a simple, ordinary pink dress bought at a nearby discount store. That garment had color, was intact, and smelled nice. She felt… like a princess! She couldn’t stop looking at herself in the mirror, but she didn’t know how to put into words what she was feeling. She simply didn’t know the words. And the ones she did know got stuck in her mouth. How could she express everything she was feeling? The woman hugged her and smiled warmly.
“Gio,” she said—and that became her nickname from then on—“The lovely thing about clothes is that they let us express what we still don’t know how to say with words.”
“Yes, mom.”
The two were never apart again, and Giovanna learned to love clothing and to express herself through it with expert eloquence.
